The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
