Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor
In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
