A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
